But more often than not, it could also be the hotel room you’ve stayed in.

If it’s the hotel room you’ve missed, then you’re fortunate because we can help you relieve that feeling in the comforts of your home. Why spend a lot in luxurious hotels or air-bnbs if you can convert your bedroom and make it feel like a hotel room? Here are some tips for you.

First things first, the bed. For any luxurious hotel, there’s one sure thing that’s similar- a comfortable mattress. Best thing about mattresses is that it’s something you can use in the long run. Think of it as an investment you may use for at least half a decade. Not bad, right?

When shopping for mattress, go for the thick ones with extra support. Most hotel beds come with a built in pillow support on the top, so you might as well go for the same. The trickier part is choosing between a latex bed and a memory foam.

The first line of consideration is whether you’ll be using your air-conditioning unit for longer hours. If not, latex bed is the obvious choice as it offers better air circulation and retain less heat. It is also more firm thus suited for back sleepers or those with spinal complications. On the other hand, memory foam are in general more comfortable as you may feel like sinking into a soft bed when on it. It is also advisable for those sleeping with restless sleeping partners as it helps in decreasing motion transfer.

Hotels usually use memory foam mattresses if not a hybrid type combining memory foam and latex into one.

A thread count in general represents how soft a bed sheet is- the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet. Although hotels use beddings with high thread count, you wouldn’t want to force it especially given the humidity in Singapore. If you do, instead of being relaxed on a soft bedding it will make you feel too warm and uncomfortable. Unless your air-conditioning unit is open every time you sleep, then opt for a thread count of linen that’s not too high.

In particular, choose a sheet with a thread count of 300 and a 100% long-staple cotton sheets. It will give you the optimum sleeping experience given the circumstances. Percale and satin sheets for the weave type are also highly recommended.

Light and delicate scents of linen spray should also be applied on newly laundered sheets. This will give a luxurious hotel scent and can also reduce stress and anxiety.

The shades or color palette of your bedroom is not only focused on the color of the walls or the floor; the furniture and other bedroom accessories  should also be well thought of. If you can recall, luxurious or classy hotel rooms have neutral color palette offering a sense of calm and balance.

Either you go for darker shades like gray and black and come up with sort of a minimalist themed room or go for lighter shades such as white walls with  accents all over the place are good choices. Accents include but are not limited to dark wood, matte black, or metallics.

When in doubt, come up with a mood board that will help you in imagining the right color combination for your hotel-like bedroom.

In order to make your bedroom feel like a hotel room, windows should be considered.  What hotels usually do is to put up day and night curtains for flexibility to guests. The same can be done in your bedroom wherein you pull out the necessary curtain for the given period. Just remember to buy plain fabrics or faintly printed ones to make it seem classy and elegant.

Although not commonly used in hotels, you may also opt for blinds or shades. It’s a more modern but still stylish way of dealing with your windows.

One key feature of high end  hotels is  excellent lighting plan. The color temperature is well thought of, the lighting fixtures are a great fit and lighting controls are all accessible from the bed. The same thing should be the case for your bedroom.

Hotel room lighting is  designed in such a way where lights are properly layered. This means that there’s a combination of ambient, task and accent lighting.

For ambient lighting, a flush-mount ceiling light can be sufficient especially for small rooms. If the room is bigger and the floor to ceiling clearance is more than typical, hanging lamps can also be considered. Recessed pinlights and downlights can also be added to perfectly complement the primary light. Wall lamps can then be installed on nightstands to aid in task lighting. Some hotel rooms even use pendant lamps hanging from the ceiling to a low point just above the side table for task lighting. Accent lights via cove lights can also be installed to make the room feel more cozy and relaxing. Bedside lamps can also be used as nice accent lightings and also as task lighting for that light for bedside reading sessions – check out our Teesook Minimalist Pin-Up Wall Lamp featured on this list of best bedside lamps as well!

Now that you know how to make your sleeping space feel  like a hotel room, don’t forget to improve one last thing on your room, the bathroom! This is actually  what sets apart common hotel rooms from high-end ones.

For a sophisticated and elegant finish, go for marble-like tiles for the walls. For the floor, a textured finish that will complement the wall tiles for added safety is a good choice. You may also opt to put plants and artworks to enhance the look and mood of your ensuite and some diffuser that will give a spa-like atmosphere. IInstalling a good waterproof bluetooth speaker to play relaxing music is also a good move.

If possible, cap off your ensuite with a bath tub to really have a hotel-like vibe to your room. There are free standing bath tubs available that you can just buy and install directly into a particular space while there’s still the common bath tub that will need masonry works.
