Rainbow Inspired Home Décor Ideas You Need To Try

RAINBOW INSPIRED

Some people want that pop of colour, while others are looking at nursery designs. There are even some that are just plain crazy about rainbows – we don’t blame them; since when have you seen something that has 7 very contrasting covers without looking tacky and overdone? It is commonly thought that the rainbow spectrum is a very popular theme for children’s room, we disagree. You can be an adult and desire to have some burst of colour in our space. In this article, we’ll be outlining the different ways you can inject the rainbow element into your space without it coming across as too childish or as some kind of cheap party decor. Interested? Stay tuned for this colourful post!

ONE :: Walls

Let’s not talk about the elementary method of painting your wall in various shades of the rainbow. If you’re DIY-ing this project or you already have some sort of theme for your room, painting your room isn’t advisable. Instead, go for a more muted design like decals and simple patterns. The geometric patterns are so minimalist and chic. They may look hard but once you get past all the masking taping, everything else afterwards is easy peasy. For the hexagonal pattern, an easy way around it is by creating a template you can use to outline the pattern. But the prize for being way too easy has to go to the polka-dot, confetti-like pattern.

This isn’t just a decor statement, it is also a testament of your artistic capabilities and we believe everyone is an artist! Also, this is for those chameleons who really do not want to do anything permanent to their walls. There are tons of rainbow-inspired artwork you can tackle. You can always try the highly Pinterest-ed melting crayon art or this weird (but flippin’ cool!) wall art installation by John Breed. Do send us a picture of your artwork! We’d love to see them. Why shelves when there are so many other furniture you can choose from? This is simple: Unlike the other furniture, shelves have sections making it really easy to distinguish the colours and, not to mention, application will be a breeze! Colouring each section a different colour has a more grasping effecting then say… painting multiple coloured stripes on chairs or across your table.

There are a few ways you can go about doing this. First, you can paint the surface of the drawers. Such a design will be perfect for child’s room. Or you can opt for simple wall-mounted shelves painted in different colours. Certainly the second option has a more mature and sophisticated style to it but we cannot deny how much excitement and energy the new colours add to the room.

A third way is to colour the interiors of an open shelving unit. This way, the colours act as a backdrop to the contents of the shelves. It directs the attention to the objects on display without being too outright with it. If you have drawers, an artful way is to only paint the drawer knobs! Alternatively, if solid colours are too plain for your liking, you can use patterned paper to line the insides of your shelves. However, to retain the rainbow coloured effect, go for patterned paper with a obvious main colour.

Probably the biggest yay yay you get from the rainbow motif is the illusion of organization. When you colour code everything by sorting them into their respective colours, the space will look less haphazard and more meticulous. Additionally, organizing the items into their respective colours makes the overall space much brighter than it was. Don’t understand how that works? Think about mixing red, blue and yellow paint. Now, that cannot possibly look vibrant and bright as did each colour on its own, right?

So what items are up for this “organization”? The more frequent choices are books and stationery. When you arrange your books spines in a gradient along your open book shelf, it instantly becomes the main attraction of the room. The eye catching display serves as a great backdrop for photos and it only take a few dedicated hours to set up (really depends on how vast your library is!). Additionally, the wide variety of shades and colours from the book spines make it easier for the display to be integrated with the surrounding theme. If you’re going for a subtler rainbow touch, going for colour coded stationery storage is a safe way to head. They are simple to make and pretty to display!

FOUR :: Flowers & Plants

These pretty creatures are the subtlest and most convenient way to add colour into any space. What’s more is that flowers come in many, many colours; you’ll never be out of choices for each colour! Don’t get me started on how great plants are for any space. Other than maintenance, there is nothing disagreeable about having plants and flowers in your space! Bring out your inner florist as you experiment with different vases, flower arrangements and colour patterns. Top tip! If your clear vase is deterring your from using a floral foam, use clear scotch tape to create a discreet grid pattern; this will ensure that the flowers will stay in its position. If you don’t get a mental visual of what we’re talking about, check out this video by Mom Hacks for a clearer picture.

Remember the primary school science experiment where you place a white flower in coloured water and slowly observe the flower taking on the colour of the water? That’s exactly what we’ll be up to here! Get 7 clear glass bottles and fill them up such that the water level is exactly the same in every bottle. Use food colouring to colour the water then plop your white flower into the bottles. It’ll probably take a day or two for the colour to set in, yes it is long but it is so #worthit.

FIVE :: Lights

You can to add rainbow into your room but you do not want to disrupt the general theme you have going on. Light accents of rainbow can be added through colourful lights. Coloured lights? Doesn’t that sound familiar? Yes! We just did an article on adding coloured light fixtures into your space to add a little something to its character and vibe.
