Edison Bulb DIYs That YOU Have To Try 2

EDISON BULB

We’re back for another series of Edison Light Bulb DIYs! If ‘another?’ is what you’re wondering then you got to check out our first blog entry on Edison Bulb DIYs over here. Here, we’ll be continuing our journey to be the very best, like no one ever was. To find every Edison Bulb DIY is our quest, to test them is our cause! Be it light fixture or decorative piece, we promise you pretty pieces for your home or cafe. This list includes DIYs that are slightly harder than the previous list so brace yourselves!

ONE :: Woodland Lights

Those going for the Scandinavian themed decor are bound to adore this DIY. The woodlands style lights brings a very raw and natural vibe to the room; sliding in very seamlessly to an exposed brick wall backdrop or muted furnishing. The branches and the glow from the bulbs create a zen-like peacefulness that yoga enthusiasts can chant ‘namaste’ with. It only gets better from here: the nature of this light fixture makes it very customizable and very difficult to replicate so you’ll never find another similar to yours! If you do find one, tell us: We might have found one of the greatest con artists of the century.

A common way to incorporate the bare branch with Edison bulbs is to twine hanging Edison bulbs around it and use it as a hanging light fixture. Though conventional, there is a variety of ways this can be interpreted: What type of branch will you be using? How many branches? How will you be arranging the light bulbs? Your answers to these questions is what makes your woodland light fixture yours. Experiment with different kinds of wood and bulb casings for a colored difference. Here are a few hanging woodland light fixtures we simply love.

Don’t go skipping to the next point if you don’t have hanging Edison bulbs! Oh no you don’t. This DIY is for you. You can create a table lamp that is woodland themed by using a branch to form a backbone for the Edison light fixture.  We love how the rope detailing in the left picture adds a nautical touch to the light fixture. Doesn’t it look like an artifact stolen from Narnia?

TWO :: Yarn shade

Last time we went through a fun and simple cage and geometric shade DIY for Edison bulbs. Here are two more shade DIYs for you to play dress-up with your Edison light bulbs! This yarn shade DIY is simple and fits perfectly into a modern oriental themed space. What’s great is that yarn is so easily available in a multitude of colours, you won’t have problems searching for the perfect shade to match your space. Dana from MADE Everyday has an excellent tutorial on making one, do check it out!

We love the rainbow yarn shades in the photo! However, we think it’d be better with cords of corresponding colors – so matchy matchy. Thankfully, you’ll be able to try that out with our KAKA Colourful Single Bead Bulb Holder.

Dana uses a large bouncy ball to form the shape for her lamp shade, but if you do not have one, switch it out for a balloon. Don’t tell me you don’t have a balloon okay! Top tip: Coat your bouncy ball with petroleum jelly or any form of lubricant to prevent your yarn from sticking to the balloon/ball. Speaking from experience, the yarn shade will cave in after bursting the balloon because it is stuck too firmly to the surface of the balloon.

THREE :: Doily shade

This next shade DIY will be going in a more feminine route by opting for the delicate and girly doily. Like the previous two DIYs on shades, the doily shade gives the DIYer the creative freedom to decide on the pattern and colour of the doily.  A doily is an ornamental mat with intricate scalloping and patterns along the edges and occasionally, across the entire doily. There are all kinds of doilies and they normally come in white. For this DIY, it is important to go for doilies made of fabric and not paper. This DIY, like the yarn shade, involves the use of mod podge which will tear paper doilies. Check out Seventeen Magazine video tutorial on how you can nail the doily lamp DIY. This technique can be used to make other matching doily ornaments and furnishing! Experiment and tickle your creative bones.

Other than doilies, close and equally chic alternatives are lace, mesh and other perforated fabric. They all bring different qualities and styles to the space, take some time to figure out which will best fit into your environment.

FOUR :: Terrarium

Ever wanted a little Zen garden in your space? When we say “little” we mean little little, as in miniscule. Yes, we’ll be fitting a little garden into our light bulb for you to bring around school – or work – and show it off to your friends. Cause check it, how many people has a mini garden? So cool! Also, you can totally personalize it to your taste and preferences, or the theme of your space. All the way from the choice of light bulb shape to the variety of plants available for you, the entire product will be a unique entity that literally no one else in the world has. The permutation of possibilities is endless! If you’re up for this, have a look at Get Crafty Crafty’s YouTube tutorial on how you can get your own terrarium. It looks so simple!

FIVE :: Chandelier

This might sound daunting because when you heard ‘Chandelier’, you think of the majestic light fixtures with glistening rows of crystals draping from one arms to another. But let us assure you that isn’t the look we’re going for, especially not for HDBs and cafes. The traditional chandelier has a sort of grandeur that would overpower small spaces, therefore we’ll be diving into a modern and minimalist approach to chandeliers. Here are three types of chandeliers you can try out.

First, the framed chandelier. As the name suggests, you’ll have to obtain a frame to make this work. This is similar to the woodland lights DIY but we’re going for a sleeker and cleaner finish for this DIY. Hipsters would opt for a vintage bicycle wheel as the frame to twine their Edison light fixtures around. The good thing about using a bicycle wheel are the spokes criss-crossing in the middle: This fills the empty void and is another hanging opportunity for the bulbs. However, if you prefer not to use a bicycle wheel, a cheap and brilliant alternative is to use a hula hoop! Coat your hula hoop in spray paint or wrap a ribbon around it to give it a professional finish. The amazing thing about using a hula hoop is its light weight!

Second, the spider chandelier. This takes a very minimalist industrial approach to the chandelier and works well for multiple bulb fixtures. After installing the Edison light fixture to the ceiling, plan where you want to hang your Edison bulbs at – this is extremely important as you do not want the light fixture to be unbalanced. Purchase some Command wire hooks from the nearest mama shop and install them at the marked areas. Viola! You have a simple yet artistic spider chandelier. On the right you’ll see the third chandelier: the Macrame chandelier. This is a chandelier DIY suitable for single Edison bulb light fixtures as it makes a big impression without necessarily being big. Totally obsessed with the beach-y, bohemian vibes radiating from this DIY. Head on to The Free People blog for DIY instructions!

SIX :: Macrame hanger

Since we can’ get enough of the summer boho style, here’s another Macrame Edison bulb DIY for you guys. Unlike the previous Macrame DIY, this DIY only requires some hemp or yarn and scissors. Adding beads to your macrame hanger after every knot makes it more boho chic!  We love ARFOTOGRAFIE’s blog post for this DIY but we know those knots can get a little confusing, so check out AnneorShine’s video <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNfyjQZrF7I> tutorial on a Macrame planter! And who says you’re limited to a plant hanger? If you like, you can keep to a functioning Edison bulb or use the terrarium you DIY-ed earlier on! This Macrame hanger will look amazing against your window sill as it brings in peaceful vibes from the surrounding fauna. Give it a try!
